Chief Michael Ruth was sworn in on August 25, 2010. He came to the City of Countryside from the Skokie Police Department where he served for 29 years. Ruth began in Skokie as a patrol officer and worked his way up through the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant, and commander. Ruth’s additional responsibilities included hostage negotiator for the Tactical Intervention Unit (SWAT) and public information officer. Prior to working with the Skokie Police Department, Ruth also served the Hometown and Alsip Police Departments.
Chief Ruth is a graduate of the Chicago Police Academy, 207th session of the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety Executive Management Program, and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Program. Chief Ruth earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Governors State University and a Master of Science Degree in Criminal and Social Justice from Lewis University. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the FBI National Academy Associates, the FBI MLEEDS Graduate’s Association, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, and past President of the Greater Cook County Police Captains Association. Ruth recently earned the distinguished designation of Certified Police Chief. Ruth continues to keep current on law enforcement issues, educating others, as an instructor in Criminal Justice at Governors State University.
