What is a Zero Energy Building?

A Zero Energy Building generates 100% of the energy it consumes on an annual basis through on-site renewable energy. Through a combination of creating renewable energy while reducing energy demand, buildings can operate efficiently enough to meet this goal. Buildings are certified by the International Living Future Institute and require strict documentation review by a third-party auditor.

Zero Energy Buildings contribute much less greenhouse gas into the atmosphere, helping to preserve the ozone layer and preventing increased global warming. While initial costs may be higher than traditional buildings, these costs are typically recouped through energy savings over a relatively short period of time.
