Mayor Sean McDermott received several complaints about cut through traffic on 56th, 57th and 58th streets due to the construction on East Avenue. To address the residents’ concerns, Mayor McDermott asked the Infrastructure Committee to investigate possible interventions to reduce and slow traffic in the affected area. The Infrastructure Committee met twice to discuss speed humps, speed tables, access and speed signs. The three speed signs currently on these streets collect data on the number of vehicles and speed of each vehicle. The City engineer analyzed the data for both east bound and west bound traffic. He made several recommendations. The Infrastructure Committee and ultimately the City Council approved the purchase of three more speed signs and the posting of no right turn except for local traffic on southbound East Avenue. These are temporary measures being taken during the construction on East Avenue.
The City expects signs to be delivered and posted within 2 weeks.
